Testing

Today was my oldest son's last day of state testing for the NC public schools. He started last week with science, and then this week had tests in reading, math with calculators and math without calculators. My question is #1, Why are they teaching children to use calculators? 2. How are they supposed to learn computation and long division of 3 or 4 numbers into 6 or 8 numbers and multiplying 5 numbers with 3 or 4 numbers? I'm not the greatest at math...to say the least, but teaching elementary school aged kids to do math with calculators is ridiculous!
